Shopee Live Enables Keropok Lekor Seller from Terengganu to Own a House

Keropok Mfaizz Popularizes Packing Secara Live Nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 December 2023 – Muhammad Faizz bin Pausan Arif from Terengganu,

owner-operator of Keropok Mfaizz, is one of Shopee Live’s top record-breaking rural

sellers for selling over RM500,000 keropok lekor in just three months. Every morning at 8am

on Shopee Live, he becomes a household name as Malaysian audiences watch him pack two

thirds fish meat mixture for instant delivery on his ‘Packing Secara Live’ series.

“I am very happy as Shopee Live has changed my life – previously, I was living

with my mother and my sales were limited by slow traffic to my offline store.

With Shopee Live, I’ve managed to build my own home, have my own assets,

and I’m now able to take care of my family,” said Muhammad Faizz, who now owns

his own factory and processes 1 ton of fish meat per day and considering additional

production capacity to keep up with customer demands on livestream.

His biggest lesson: content is king. ‘Based on my experience, people get bored

by the same types of content, so I always have to try new ways to engage with

them. I used to show them how to make keropok live, and that was hot…

before the views dropped off. Then I told them to buy five packets of lekor and

get homemade chilli sauce free, but sales were still slow.

When I show ‘this is my product’ things I lose viewers and sales.

After I did Packing Secara Live, my sales broke all records on 11.11 because

customers love to see their products being packed and ready to post.

I am always searching for new content.’

Muhammad Faizz explains why he stands out from the crowd of livestream

sellers by picking the 8am slot on Shopee Live: ‘People love to eat

keropok lekor as fresh as possible, so I show the breakfast audience how

I mix 20kg of boneless ikan selayang fish meat with 10kg tepung sagu and

fry it with other tasty ingredients live until it is half-cooked, and then

vacuum pack it in time for the courier to pick it up at noon. When my

customers receive their packages in two days, they can fry it again to eat.”

Many of his competitors in Terengganu are offline keropok sellers who

have to wait for the school holiday period to experience any uptick in sales.

Muhammad Faizz on the other hand, has broken the norm and sold over

18,000 orders to customers nationwide, mostly from Selangor and Johor

since joining Shopee Live in March 2023. A true believer now in online

platforms, Muhammad Faizz aspires to take things to the next level as the

top keropok online entrepreneur in Malaysia.

“Thanks to its significant traffic and conversion rates, I save a lot of

marketing costs on Shopee Live. My plan is to add more live stream

sessions, and more production capacity and machines so that I can do

Live for longer, and hire a host who can act as my backup.”

His success is proving beneficial to his local community. He sources all fish

from fishermen in Terengganu to make keropok lekor, keropok ikan putih

and keropok segera. He now hires 25 employees in his neighborhood to

help in production and packaging and is motivating his four siblings

(who are all keropok sellers) to go online.

Northern Malaysia Leads the Way in Shopee Live Streams

Northern Malaysia Leads the Way in Shopee Live Streams

Fashion and Jewellery Top the List of Best-Selling Items

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 September 2023 – Shopee Spotlights Local reveals that the top performing Shopee live stream sellers from each state across Malaysia sold 4.6 Million ringgit in goods in the last twelve months by hosting more than 2,300 streams*. Shopee Live plays an integral role in driving the success of Malaysian businesses, as demonstrated by the recent 9.9 sales event where local sellers achieved a remarkable 36-fold order growth.

Shopee revealed that half of the items sold by the most active livestream sellers were fashion, and this was evenly split between new and pre-loved apparel. This was closely followed by jewellery, perfume and beauty products which made up a quarter of livestream goods sold.

Interestingly, the top four live stream sellers from Penang all sell jewellery, which may explain how the Northern region boasts the highest sales from Shopee Live of all regions with 1.5 million ringgit in goods sold followed by the Central region at 1.2 million ringgit sold. The most active region on Shopee Live is the East Coast with 30% of all streams coming from Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang sellers. All states except Johor have livestream sellers who sell bundled and preloved goods.

Ranked by sales orders achieved during the live streams all year, top performing sellers in Malaysia on Shopee Live were: firstly, NaNNa Crystal Jewellery from Penang, secondly, ____SSLine29____her’s bag Heanny from Sarawak and third, Miera E-store from Kuala Lumpur selling preloved goods. Momo House from Kedah is a Shopee Preferred + seller with 1 million followers, the most of any livestreamer.

Shopee Live sellers have benefited from the high levels of customer engagement and wide reach, demonstrating impressive growth. One such seller is Lulu Waniey, the owner of Lulu Resources from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, that offers Muslimah clothing**.

Before Shopee Live, Lulu operated in offline markets like Pasar Malam and Pasar Pagi. Some days, she could barely make RM100, facing constraints like renting a physical store and inconsistent market timings. She changed her own fortunes by embracing Shopee Live, which expanded her customer base, and boosted her sales significantly up to RM100,000 per month.

Shopee Live's flexible scheduling allowed her to connect with customers at optimal shopping times, while eliminating physical store costs. Personalised content and built-in engagement activities drove strong customer relationships.

Lulu shared, "I am now 100% on Shopee Live. Having learned the ropes and gained confidence,  I feel like I have my own large store, where customers eagerly await my broadcasts. What's more, I now have a better work-life balance, spending more quality time with my family. Running my business on Shopee Live has brought me not only joy but also fulfilment."

Meanwhile, Ooi Zhi Wei, owner of Zhi Wei Herb selling Grade-A nutritional herbs and nuts, was an early adopter of Shopee Live in 2019***. Zhi Wei embraced face-to-face interactions with customers, offered real-time product demonstrations, and ensured transparency on every live stream. Zhi Wei let shoppers see exactly what they would get when making a purchase, and developed strong relationships by allowing direct questions and answers.

Like Lulu Resources, Zhi Wei Herb saw immediate results. “My store performance improved markedly. Stronger relationships with my clients translated into higher store traffic. For instance, if we had 12,000 viewers during a session, approximately 70% of them would subsequently visit our Shopee store.”

Shopee Launches First-of-its-Kind Nationwide Campaign

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 September 2023 - ‘Shopee Spotlights Local — Unveiling Malaysian Gems’ calls for Malaysians to shop local e-commerce sellers to preserve Malaysia’s heritage, nurture local talents, and drive our economy in an inclusive and sustainable way.

By making the book, the first of its kind in this country, available to the public from 31 August 2023, Shopee aims to empower all Malaysians to start shopping purposefully with an immediate focus on Made-in-Malaysia products from underserved communities. Upholding its mission of using technology to help the underserved, Shopee empowers sellers by identifying and highlighting local sellers for better access to marketing solutions and hyper-localised campaigns, managing them so they succeed on Shopee, increasing seller education via its free Shopee University courses, and providing incentives so they find more opportunities on Livestream commerce.

The 100-page, full-colour booklet (downloadable in English and Bahasa Malaysia on Shopee Malaysia PR Newsroom website) is the first part of a series of episodic content that gives voice to Malaysian sellers breaking barriers online. It profiles Shopee sellers in each state who are top performing in terms of popularity, biggest storefronts, green products, exporters, livestreamers, and women-owned businesses. In addition, the book includes street-level stories and testimonials of sellers who have used their online success to uplift others in their communities.

Shopee is using the Shopee Spotlights Local campaign and authentic seller stories to promote greater awareness on how buying from small, independent sellers in our neighborhoods preserve local industries, reduce the carbon footprint, increase the level of personalised offerings, and encourage more homegrown entrepreneurs and innovators. Doubling as a handy guide for users to protect themselves, the book offers tips on shopping safely, understanding Shopee Guarantee, identifying responsible sellers, and its 100% Authenticity policy.

The vignettes about sellers pursuing their dreams online and showing us that Malaysians from all walks of life can build communities, include:

Zeeda Aziz of Pasar Kedah, who did not let her leg amputation stop her from expanding her ikan bilis business online

Edward Wong of HomeDecoStore, who listened to his customers and designed prayer mats customised to local preferences

Hafiz Oon of Mr Bentong, whose popular ginger juices have garnered so much word of mouth that he sources from ten ginger farms in Pahang to meet demands

“Malaysian businesses near you are often the beating heart of our local economy and the backbone of our communities. When you shop locally online, you are supporting Made-in-Malaysia products from underserved communities. We are heartened to see the support that many of our local sellers continue to receive through their online businesses, and remain committed to partnering with and supporting them in their e-commerce journey,” said Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing at Shopee Malaysia.

Shopee aims to distribute 15,000 free copies of the booklet to users free in all states as they receive their parcels from SPX by Malaysia Day. The online version of the book is available for download at: https://sites.google.com/shopee.com/prnewsroom/home

Shopee Express Stays Committed to Timely Deliveries Despite Unpredictable Weather

Couriers navigate through difficult circumstances to provide relief to local communities

Shopee Express has overcome unpredictable weather conditions, especially in flood-prone areas, to ensure that essential deliveries are made on time. Despite the challenges posed by the weather in several locations such as Kuantan, Muadzam, and Rompin in Pahang as well as Johor Jaya, Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Muar, Segamat, and Yong Peng in Johor, Shopee Express remains committed to providing fast and reliable delivery services to communities in Malaysia.

The unpredictable weather in Malaysia posed significant challenges to businesses operating in the country, particularly those in the logistics and delivery sectors. In such cases, Shopee Express adapted quickly to ensure that unfavourable weather conditions do not impact couriers and deliveries in such scenarios. These measures enable them to deliver orders on schedule while maintaining a high level of safety, care, and precision.

While rescheduling may be necessary in some instances due to local authorities closing off specific routes due to potential high risk of flood or landslide, Shopee Express ensured that customers were kept informed of any changes to their delivery schedules through push notifications. Parcels were delivered diligently at the earliest possible time once conditions permitted.

Muhammad Faris Bin Ismail, 21, a Shopee Express courier from Sri Medan, Johor, who regularly covers Seri Damai Perdana, stated that during the recent flood, he had to navigate through floodwaters as high as 3.5 feet and was occasionally stranded during the journey. Amidst difficult conditions, he persists in delivering parcels safely by foot, fulfilling his duty and the confidence placed in him. He recognizes the importance of bringing joy and convenience to the local communities and feels grateful to be able to make a positive difference in people's lives.

2 / 2

Norazman Bin Mohd Ismail, 34, a Shopee Express courier from Karak, Pahang for over 2 years, shared that the flood season presents uncertainties for delivery services. He feels deeply for those impacted by the floods and strives to deliver parcels safely and promptly as he understands that some parcels may contain urgent items like food or supplements that customers need. Yet, he knows that circumstances beyond his control may result in delays and apologises beforehand for any inconvenience, all the while maintaining his commitment to offering reliable delivery services to customers.

Cheah Lee Sun, Head of Shopee Express, affirmed that timely delivery is important to the communities they serve. “We worked tirelessly to fulfil our promises, even in the face of unpredictable weather conditions. Our couriers are trained to handle such situations, and we are proud of their dedication to support the affected communities.”

“These hardworking couriers handle numerous orders every day, covering long distances to reach their destinations. The number of parcels delivered is a testament to their commitment to supporting local communities. Despite encountering unforeseen challenges along their journey, they display resilience and sacrifice their personal time with loved ones to fulfil their responsibilities."

Shopee Express has become a reliable and trustworthy partner for online shoppers, thanks to its same-day delivery and expanded coverage in Borneo. In order to ensure the safety of its couriers, Shopee Express carefully monitors the weather every day, and provides extra protection to customers' parcels by using gunny sacks and plastic wraps.

Shopee: 63% of Malaysian Sellers Positive about E-Commerce

Shopee Malaysia kickstarted the New Year by launching its three-part 2023 Consumer Trends series called ‘Adapting to Malaysia’s Digital Consumers in 2023’. The first part of the series that focuses on sellers found that 63% of Malaysian Sellers feel excited and positive about e-commerce opportunities in 2023. In particular, sellers from the Health and Beauty (71%), Toys, Kids, and Babies (69%), and Fashion and Lifestyle (66%) categories are the most optimistic, stating that they are on the right track to capture the opportunities in 2023.

Parts 2 and 3 of the series that focuses on Malaysian buyers and influencers will be shared in greater detail in the upcoming weeks. Findings can be utilised by businesses to tap e-commerce and digital services to drive resilience and stay relevant.

The survey covering over 1,000 Malaysian marketplace sellers in December 2022 found that sellers are excited to take advantage of three main e-commerce trends observed by Shopee, in staying digitally resilient and relevant on e-commerce: 1) Increased and savvier use of digital services, 2) Growing adoption of digital services among consumers living outside big cities, and 3) The rise of younger, more purposeful buyers.

1. Increased and savvier use of digital services

When asked what milestones they would like to achieve for 2023, given the digital savviness of buyers who spend more time online, 8 in 10 sellers agreed that they wanted to increase product discovery, consideration and purchase online. Specifically, 5 in 10 wanted to take advantage of Shopee’s hyperlocal campaigns tailored to engage consumers and Shopee Loyalty Program rewards to increase traffic and demand, 2 in 10 wanted to engage audiences with higher value transactions from Shopee Mall and cross-border platforms, and the remainder wanted to use Shopee’s customised recommendation tools like Daily Discover to gain better visibility and consideration.

With the Shopee Growth Program, all local sellers are also eligible to boost store performance and sales with one week free trial of the highly popular Shopee RebateNOW where buyers enjoy 10% off between 9 till 15 January 2023. In addition, local marketplace sellers can claim up to RM100 Free Ads credit for two months to enhance their store visibility and traffic between January to March.

2. Growing adoption of digital services amongst consumers living outside big cities

With technology giving better access to affordable and convenient digital products and services outside big cities, 7 in 10 sellers surveyed are interested in reaching consumers who live in Borneo in 2023. Thanks to Shopee’s integrated logistics infrastructure, sellers can take advantage of the nationwide network of warehouses and delivery hubs to reach more customers in Sabah and Sarawak. Among the sellers most keen to tap new audiences in Borneo, by category, are: FMCG (81%), Sports, Entertainment & Recreation (75%), and Groceries & Pets (74%).

3. The rise of younger, more purposeful buyers

In response to the rise of younger, more purposeful buyers entering the marketplace in 2023, 50% of sellers surveyed are interested in catering to value-based shoppers who support Local Malaysian Made goods via Shop Malaysia circle, and Green Sellers via ShopeeGivesBack microsite. They are also excited about the inclusion of more educational content in influencers’ live streams that demonstrate the importance of supporting these causes.

As part of their 2023 New Year Resolutions, 95% of sellers want to upskill themselves with free Shopee University Courses in Sales, Marketing, and Operations. The most popular Shopee marketplace features they would like to incorporate in their strategies are: Marketing Tools (35%), Listing Optimizers (29%) and Business Insights (27%). A small percentage of sellers require Batch Tools (8%) to process bulk orders efficiently.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia said, “I am beyond excited for the marketplace sellers who have positive resolutions in 2023 to try new features and discover new opportunities. Just two weeks ago, I personally handed out 34 awards at our Shopee Super Awards to Super Growing, Super Customer Satisfaction and Super Favorite Sellers, so I know that they can succeed. We always put a spotlight on sellers who light the path for other sellers to succeed and create a supportive environment for them.”

Survey Methodology

● The first part of 2023 “Adapting to Malaysia’s Digital Consumers in 2023” survey was conducted by Shopee Marketplace, between 23 December and 27 December 2023. Voluntary feedback was obtained from 1,085 Malaysian sellers on the platform.

"Shopee introduces 3.15 Consumer Day, the first mega sale of the year"

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, has launched 3.15 Consumer Day, the first mega sale of the year. 3.15 Consumer Day is happening now till 15 March and will bring the excitement of Shopee’s year-end festivals to all users, giving them more reasons to celebrate and reward themselves as they gear up for the year ahead.

Shopee is pioneering 3.15 Consumer Day to bring more value and joy to all shoppers, who are now using e-commerce to fulfil their needs all year round. Everyone can be a part of 3.15 Consumer Day which features the widest variety of products, made better with 95% off deals, free shipping with no minimum spend and the chance to Spin & Win a Nissan Almera.

Adding to the 3.15 celebrations, Shopee welcomes Dato Pandelela Rinong and Datuk Abdul Latif Romly as its 3.15 brand ambassadors in Malaysia. Both athletes have an incredible track record of overcoming tough odds and dedicating their lives towards putting Malaysia on the world map, serving as an inspiration in the way they accomplish great things by prioritising well-being and celebrating achievements no matter how small. Dato Pandelela has won two Olympic medals and five World Championships medals while Datuk Latif has won two gold medals in the Paralympic Games. He holds the world record for Long Jump T20 until now.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing Campaigns at Shopee Malaysia said, “This Shopee 3.15 Consumer Day, we want to celebrate you. Be kind to yourself. Go at your own pace, celebrate the small wins and reward yourself. To better serve our consumers, we first have to understand what Malaysians have been buying since 2019.”

“At Shopee, we always put consumers at the heart of what we do, so we consistently innovate new initiatives and campaigns such as the 3.15 Consumer Day to better fulfil their needs” he added.

Understanding Malaysian shopping trends

As more people are accustomed to staying at home, Shopee noticed that many are looking to improve and prioritise themselves in terms of health, well-being and to destress. As such, there was 6 times increase in demand for Self-Care Products on the platform in 2021, compared to 2019, before the pandemic.

Physical wellness, environmental self-care, and social well-being were seen to be the top three self-care trends, as Shopee witnessed an impressive 10 times growth of demand related to better home and living.

As Malaysians paid more attention to their physical wellness, Shopee noted that 42% of self-care items sold last year pertained to personal grooming, supplements, exercise equipment, cooking and baking supplies, sleepwear, and bath and spa.

Due to Malaysians spending more time home with families, Shopee observed a 12 times uplift for snacks and 13 times increase in cooking and baking supplies in 2021 as compared to 2019.

Malaysians were also more and more into environmental self-care, to create a healthier living environment at home. They started new DIY projects, put some new wallpapers on, and grew indoor plants among other activities. This is mirrored by the 12 times increase in demand for home improvement items over 2 years.

Looking at social well-being, more Malaysians are open to the idea of having a furry companion at home as the demand for pet supplies grew 13 times in the space of two years from 2019 to 2021, as owners treat their pets with grooming, homes, pet food and treats and even fashion and accessories.

Taking a deeper dive into keyword searches data in self-care trends, Shopee noted that ‘keropok’ was searched nearly 7 times more in 2020 and over 25 times more in 2021, both as compared to 2019.

‘Kids books’ has also been one of the more popular keyword searches with over 11 times increase in 2020 compared to 2019, as moms and dads turned to Shopee to inculcate reading at a young age.

Additionally, since the launch of ShopeeFood in September 2021, the ‘bubble tea’ keyword search grew by more than 7 times by December last year, signalling a growing trend among Malaysians to reward themselves with some sweet treats through food delivery.

As part of the Shopee 3.15 Consumer Day, Shopee will also launch its #ShopeeCelebratesYou activation to bring more cheer to users across the 3.15 period.

Happening daily on Shopee Live till 15 March, users also get to play a game that will keep them on the edge of their seats, called Sampul Misteri. Lucky Callers will be required to answer a Question of the Day to unlock an envelope and stand a chance to walk away with grand cash prizes. Viewers can guess which envelope contains the grand cash prize before the show and stand a chance to win Shopee Coins with the correct guess.

Tune in to TV3 or Shopee Live at 9pm on 15 March to get your hands on the best TV deals in town, while enjoying some mesmerising local celeb performances, plus a little Korean flavour too on the Shopee TV Deals program for 3.15 Consumer Day.

  • Parents took the chance to prepare their children for the new school term, as stationeries such as pencils, pencil cases, sharpeners and more were in high demand. On 12 December, close to 870,000 units of stationery products were bought.

  • Similarly, pet owners took the opportunity to pamper their furkids during the year-end shopping festival, buying up more than half a million products including pet food and treats for their pets to enjoy the year-end festive period together.

At the same time, customers from Sabah and Sarawak took advantage of the 12.12 Birthday Sale celebrations to shop for items, as each state recorded a 5 times uplift in orders on 12 December as compared to an average day. Among the products sought after by Sabahans and Sarawakians include groceries such as dried foods, health supplements, pet supplies like cat food and cat litter as well as tools for knitting, crocheting and even gardening.

Accelerated growth for local businesses: The surge in traffic during the 12.12 celebrations has given a bigger exposure to more sellers. As a result, top local sellers from the Home & Living category collectively generated RM4.8 million in sales in a single day on 12 December. The category was very popular amongst Malaysians in the lead up to the holidays with sellers offering home improvement and decoration products enjoying higher demand.

In addition, more sellers outside big cities were also able to participate in the digital economy and boost their online presence at the 12.12 Birthday Sale; they saw 4.5 times uplift in orders, compared to an average day.

Shoppers also turned to ShopeePay for all their shopping needs, as users topped up their ShopeePay wallets 1.5 million times on 12.12 to enjoy a seamless payment experience, both online and offline.

On top of that, ShopeePay also enabled more users to connect with offline merchants at 12.12. With over 2.5 million purchases made through Deals Near Me, Shopee’s location-based online-to-offline feature, offline retailers enjoyed a boost in footfall throughout 12.12 as users redeemed their payment vouchers in-store.

A celebration for local sellers: Via its #ShopeeSapotLokal initiative, Shopee concludes its ‘Seller of the Month’ contest with users voting for their favourite local business. Drum Coffee Roasters emerged as the crowd favourite, and Malaysians can tune in to their heartwarming story on the #ShopeeSapotLokal Show on Shopee Live at 1PM on 15 December.

Based in Kota Bharu, the coffee retailer turned to e-commerce during the initial stages of the pandemic and changed their business model to become an online wholesaler. They are now shipping their products nationwide and even to Singapore via the Shopee International Platform. Drum Coffee Roasters will be taking home up to RM6,200 worth of prizes, including a feature in a Shopee Live stream session, store vouchers, Shopee ads credits and exclusive merchandise.
