 98% believe in the power of shopping locally to uplift underserved communities


KUALA LUMPUR, 28 August 2024 - Ahead of the nation’s 67th National Day, Shopee’s ‘Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024’ study reveals a remarkable trend: Malaysians are rallying behind local businesses like never before. 98% of respondents agree that shopping local strengthens and uplifts underserved communities, highlighting a growing sense of national pride and solidarity among consumers.

The ‘Sayangi Malaysia, Jom Rai Lokal 2024’ study gathered insights from a diverse group of 2,000 Malaysian shoppers, showing that 15 times more Malaysians prefer to support local entrepreneurs than international brands, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting homegrown brands and sellers. By choosing local products and services, consumers endorse the quality and authenticity of Malaysian goods and contribute to job creation and economic stability. This trend strengthens the local economy, fosters community solidarity and is a powerful force in driving the nation’s growth. 

“Supporting local businesses goes beyond just making a purchase; it is an investment in our community and the future of our economy,” said Ming Kit Tan, Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence at Shopee Malaysia. “As we celebrate Merdeka, we are deeply inspired by how Malaysians unite to uplift local enterprises. This sentiment is further reinforced by Malaysians' confidence in local sellers, with 9 in 10 expressing trust in their ability to fulfil orders and address their questions effectively. This high level of trust underscores reliability, quality service, and excellent customer support provided by local businesses, strengthening the bond between consumers and homegrown brands. It also highlights that the preference for local products isn't just about supporting the economy; it's driven by a genuine belief in the capability and excellence of local entrepreneurs.

The survey also highlights another aspect of shopping local: 70% of Malaysians show unwavering support for women and rural sellers, underscoring the importance of inclusivity in the local economy. This commitment reflects a broader desire to empower underrepresented communities, ensuring they are supported and able to grow economically. By prioritising these sellers, Malaysians contribute to local development and foster a more inclusive marketplace.

Furthermore, when asked about the influence of product origin on their purchase decisions, 8 in 10 respondents shared that they preferred shopping Made-in-Malaysia products, highlighting their appreciation for product origin and demonstrating a strong desire to uplift local communities. This preference also underscores a growing recognition of urban and rural sellers' unique value to the marketplace and a commitment to ensuring that economic opportunities are distributed more evenly across the country. By supporting local businesses, Malaysians celebrate the diversity of local products and actively contribute to the development and sustainability of these vital communities.

Shopee has also taken significant steps to support local sellers, ensuring they can focus on selling their products without worry. Features such as Cash On Delivery, On-Time Guarantee, and a 15-Day Free Returns policy make it easier for consumers to shop confidently with sellers. In fact, 85% of respondents indicated they are more likely to support local sellers if such features are available, showcasing the importance of convenience and reliability in the online shopping experience.

Empowering MSMEs: How Seller Communities Propel E-commerce Success in Malaysia

After nine years of searching for his true calling and facing several failed ventures, business owner Zaid finally discovered his passion for crafting scented candles. In 2019, he launched Lampu Cherita, a homemade scented candle store. However, his excitement soon turned to frustration as he grappled with the complexities of e-commerce and the challenges of being a novice seller. Determined to make his mark, Zaid turned to Shopee for the support and knowledge he needed. 


Through the e-commerce marketplace, Zaid gained access to free online training classes that empowered him with essential skills and knowledge to transform his business. Beyond these courses, Zaid’s know-how deepened thanks to a group of certified trainers and successful sellers who shared their invaluable insights whom he met as part of the Shopee Xperts programme. Their guidance was a game-changer, enabling Zaid to apply best practices and maximise the platform's tools more effectively. With actionable advice from these seasoned professionals, Zaid made impactful improvements to his business operations, leading to tangible results and setting Lampu Cherita on a path to success.


As Zaid immersed himself in the ShopeeUni Facebook Group, a vibrant community of sellers, he also found an invaluable support network. The group became his go-to source for inspiration and advice, helping him stay ahead of industry trends and tackle challenges with fresh perspectives. The group's collaborative environment was a critical factor in his growth and success.


However, Zaid’s journey was not without its trials. In 2021, a catastrophic flood struck, causing RM100,000 in damages to his home-based business. Yet, in the face of this adversity, the Shopee community’s response was nothing short of extraordinary. Sellers and customers rallied around him, offering crucial support and helping with the cleanup of his damaged space. “Their help during my toughest times lifted a heavy burden and reminded me of the incredible bond we’ve formed. This experience deepened my gratitude and commitment to giving back,” Zaid recalls.


This outpouring of solidarity and generosity demonstrated the profound strength and unity of the e-commerce community, fueling Zaid’s resolve to rebuild and continue his journey. Driven by gratitude and armed with the knowledge he had gained, Zaid stepped into a new role as a mentor. He actively participated in the ShopeeUni Facebook Group, sharing motivational messages, practical tips, and advice on leveraging Shopee’s tools. His insights into marketing strategies, customer engagement, and product optimization quickly earned him respect within the community.


"Having faced the challenges of running a business myself, I’m deeply grateful for the support I received. I now find great fulfilment in helping others achieve success with the same guidance and encouragement that once lifted me. Supporting my community is my way of paying it forward and helping others thrive as I have," said Zaid.


In 2022, Zaid’s contributions were officially recognized when he was selected as one of the 17 Shopee Bintang members. Zaid engaged with fellow sellers through both online and offline events, sharing his expertise during monthly Facebook Live sessions. Supporting Local Through Strategic Partnerships

Interactive Shopping Experiences Power MSME Success


The digital commerce landscape is evolving, where we see a huge shift in customer buying behaviour, particularly among Gen Z. Interactivity is at the forefront, reshaping the customer experience with livestreaming and shoppable videos leading the charge into a new era of dynamic shopping.


So, how has video changed the online shopping experience? And does it really have business potential for today’s micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)? 


According to Kantar’s latest research commissioned by Shopee, The Future of Shopping: Engaging Generation Z Shoppers in the Digital Era, nearly 70% of Gen Zs in Southeast Asia consider e-commerce platforms the starting point for their shopping journey. They rely on these platforms to research their purchases, including watching product demonstration videos. Livestreams offer the ideal touchpoint for discerning shoppers by allowing sellers to conduct in-depth walkthroughs of how items work while addressing buyers’ questions in real-time. 


The study also showed that eight in ten respondents said they seek engaging and entertaining experiences while shopping, further reinforcing the role of video content in their buying journey. This opens an excellent opportunity for MSMEs to showcase their creativity for a more interactive shopping experience while deepening their relationship with their customers. 


Sambal Success with Round-the-Clock Livestreaming

Syukor Majid, owner of Kedai Abang Syukor, began his business journey by manufacturing and selling pre-mixed beverages and other products through traditional channels. After moving online in 2015, he needed a way to reach a wider audience and boost sales for his newly launched sambal line in 2023. Aware of the challenges in promoting perishable products, Syukor turned to livestreaming on Shopee, creatively differentiating his new line from the many other brands in the market.  

His secret weapon? A revolutionary 24/7 live approach. As a result of impressive sales and interest from buyers, Syukor grew his team to include seven hosts to help manage the demand and continue delivering high-quality content. Over the first three months on Shopee Live, he made over RM 1 million, and his participation in Shopee’s double-digit sales campaigns achieved a 600% increase in sales thanks to strategic discounts and Shopee Live vouchers.

Bella Hazaha, a fashion entrepreneur from Terengganu, dreamt of shattering sleepwear stereotypes. Her vision? Cosy pyjamas that transitioned seamlessly from the bedroom to everyday wear, all while staying trendy, modest, and affordable. But reaching her audience with static images proved difficult. "Gone are the days of niche social media advertising," says Bella. She needed a platform that captured the essence of her brand: a space for real-time interaction and product demonstration.

Recently, Bella Hazaha Pyjamas began venturing into Shopee Video, seeing it as a tool to help promote her brand and increase visibility to her target audience. "It's fun to upload videos," she says, noting that while the initial results were more about engagement, she started seeing conversions shortly after.

Small Electronic Store 900% Growth Journey with Livestreaming

In 2020, Lee Chin Sun launched his dream: Allblue5367, a store brimming with cool electronics and gadgets. But starting small, with a warehouse the size of a studio apartment and just a handful of daily orders, Lee faced a challenge – how to grab attention in the vast online world? But Lee knew it wasn't just about the numbers. He kept viewers glued to their screens with creative content that provided entertainment beyond shopping. By 2024, Allblue5367's monthly sales was at a mind-blowing 900% compared to 2020, reaching a whopping RM1 million. Their warehouse had also grown to a massive 33,000 square feet.

Kantar’s research also revealed that 68% of Gen Z respondents show a higher purchase completion rate on e-commerce platforms compared to other channels. It further noted that while shoppers take their time to conduct in-depth research for their purchases, a seamless return and refund process, along with next-day delivery services, emerge as top considerations for carting out​​. 

In response to these evolving shopping behaviours and recognising the opportunity they present for MSMEs to further drive growth, Shopee recently introduced new programmes to enhance the shopping experience for Malaysians, such as Instant Delivery, Next Day Delivery, and the On-Time Guarantee to help ensure prompt deliveries, with the On-Time Guarantee even offering customers an RM5 voucher if an order arrives late. 

In addition, Shopee also introduced a 15-Day Free Returns policy that allows users to return eligible items across all product categories for free within the 15-day period, offering a full refund for 'Change of Mind' returns with no questions asked. Additionally, Shopee’s best-in-class Return and Refund process can be completed within two days for payments via ShopeePay—significantly faster than the industry average of seven days.

These features make it easier for customers to make purchases without worrying about the hassle of returns and refunds or additional shipping expenses. Shopee Discovers 93% of Malaysian Women Seek Inclusive Muslimah Fashion

 KUALA LUMPUR, 5 July 2024 – Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia & Taiwan, is at the forefront of providing inclusive Muslimah fashion options for Malaysian women. Shopee’s Gaya Lagi Lit Inclusive Fashion Study revealed that a staggering 93% of respondents prioritise finding Muslimah and inclusive clothing options on the platform. This isn't just a preference – nearly all respondents (98%) expressed confidence in Shopee meeting their needs for this specific style. These findings solidify Shopee's position as the go-to destination for Muslimah fashion that caters to a wide range of styles and body types.


Nearly three-quarters (74%) of respondents identified inclusive clothing that accommodates age, size, and body type as their top priority. Additionally, 16% seek modest clothing suitable for all activities, highlighting the need for versatile pieces that fit seamlessly into their lifestyles. The remaining 10% expressed interest in sustainable materials and clothing designed for special needs, showcasing a well-rounded understanding of the evolving Muslimah fashion landscape.

The survey also revealed a strong sense of community and support for local Malaysian Muslimah fashion businesses. A remarkable 97% of respondents consider it very important to support local SMEs such as Ariana Exclusive, Desince, Garden Store, Hany Shop, Indah Pesona, Le’Fonse, Marvelry, Muslimin and Muslimah, and Syifa Exclusive, that prioritise inclusivity and diversity in their designs. This not only empowers local businesses but also strengthens the Malaysian fashion scene and economy.

Shopee and Ministry of Health Unveil Pek Kasih Mama Initiative

 

Shopee Mum's Club Empowers Mothers with Care Packages & Long-Term Support


KUALA SELANGOR, 15 JUNE 2024 - Shopee Malaysia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), launched the Pek Kasih Mama CSR campaign today. This heartfelt initiative is dedicated to uplifting local communities through technology and providing essential support to mothers across Malaysia. The launch event, held at Dewan MPKS Puncak Alam, was graced by Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Bin Ahmad who personally distributed 300 of the care packages to mothers and expectant mothers. A total of 1,000 care packages have been pledged for this initiative.


Each Pek Kasih Mama package is thoughtfully curated to include essential baby and maternal care items, such as MOH-certified diapers, baby wipes, bath products, towels, breastfeeding necessities, and skincare products suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The remaining 700 care packages will also be distributed at various government events nationwide, including Program Madani Afiat.

The Pek Kasih Mama campaign signifies Shopee’s commitment to providing long-term support to mothers. Heat oil in a shallow frying pan. Drop in dollops of the sardine batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown.

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 May 2024 - ‘The Future of Shopping: Engaging Generation Z Shoppers in the Digital Era’ market study by Shopee in collaboration with Kantar found that 86% of Gen Zs tend to seek "shoppertainment" apart from purchasing products, when browsing on e-commerce platforms such as Shopee. Survey respondents crave live connections with like-minded individuals while enjoying informative and entertaining content when shopping online.


In fact, a significant 71% of respondents actively seek out product reviews and demonstrations, turning to livestream features like Shopee Live to make informed purchases. They prioritise detailed product descriptions, search recommendations tailored to their needs, and live reviews from influencers for a seamless shopping experience. Malaysians resonate with Shopee Affiliates’ authentic content and genuine engagement, seeking their input and personal advice such as product durability, discounts, and preferences for each purchase.


Interestingly, while a majority of respondents seek honest and informative product reviews, 4 in 10 actively seek entertainment throughout their purchase journey. This demographic would likely be drawn to features like discounts and rewards that are exclusive to Shopee Live. They actively participate in livestreams that have Shopee Coins release missions, and seek interesting game shows and exciting giveaways on Shopee Mamak.

Shopee Strengthens Buyer Confidence with On-Time Guarantee Program

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 April 2024 - Shopee’s ‘The Future of Shopping: Engaging Generation Z Shoppers in the Digital Era’ market study in collaboration with Kantar found that 70% of Malaysian Gen Z’s will shop online if they are confident of a smooth delivery experience. Survey respondents prioritised in particular free shipping with no minimum spend and next day delivery whenever hitting the checkout button.


In fact, two thirds of Gen Z’s surveyed base their confidence on Shopee's established fulfilment practices. They review the platform’s flexible shipping options, on-time delivery guarantee, customer testimonials about delivery in good condition, and use real-time order tracking consistently to have peace of mind. The study also found that 70% of Malaysian Gen Z’s are more likely to hop over from social media platforms to e-commerce sites like Shopee to complete their shopping purchases.


In response to these evolving shopping behaviours, Shopee is introducing the On-Time Guarantee program commencing on 6 May. Gen Zs Trust User and Expert Insights on Shopee

 

60% consumers prioritise platforms with easy search and user reviews


KUALA LUMPUR, 19 April 2024 - Shopee’s ‘Engaging Generation Z Shoppers in the Digital Era’ survey findings revealed that 60% of respondents prioritise platforms with easy search, comparison functionalities, and helpful reviews followed closely by comprehensive product information and trustworthiness. This emphasises the importance of building a user-friendly platform brimming with product variety, professional recommendations, and insightful user reviews to capture Gen Z's attention.


Underscoring their research-heavy habits, 30% of Gen Z strategise their purchase, holding over 70% of items in their cart for more than a day to conduct in-depth research before committing to a purchase. This highlights the importance of building a research-friendly environment, which includes offering a rich variety of research products, incorporating professional recommendations, and fostering insightful user reviews.


While research is paramount, a smooth checkout process is equally important. When asked “What will increase your likelihood of checking out your items immediately?”, 6 in 10  Gen Z shoppers focus on user experience features like product restock reminders, flash deals, and voucher applications. Additionally, easy order cancellation and price comparison tools are highly sought after. The remaining 40% look for efficient platform delivery services to finalise their purchases.


Gen Z put importance on value maximisation in their purchasing decisions. Free shipping, competitive pricing, attractive promotions, discounts and vouchers are critical motivators for 83% of respondents, demonstrating their focus on getting the most for their money. Interestingly, product quality appears to be a secondary factor when choosing a purchase channel.


Shopee's research delves even deeper, revealing that Gen Z consumers heavily rely on reviews and customer service throughout the buying journey. Over 75% actively seek out reviews from both users and experts before making a purchase. Engaging with sellers through chat features and comparing products across brands are also common practices for this generation. The remaining utilise Shopee Live and Shopee Video for product information and purchase decisions.
